Risk is a combination of the likelihood of a hazardous event occurring and the consequence of the event. Risk is a part of everyday life; we can’t avoid risks but we put things in place to manage them as effectively as possible.
The main health risk affecting the industry is:
Dermatitis is a skin condition caused by contact with something that irritates the skin or causes an allergic reaction. It usually occurs where the irritant touches the skin, but not always. This can be managed by ensuring the appropriate Protective clothing (PPE) is worn at all times and the operative has been COSHH trained.
All management is trained to IOSH level, including the Board of Directors. Even the Managing Director holds IOSH, demonstrating his passion for Health & Safety. All operatives receive a 17 stage H&S induction programme, to ensure their understanding of key issues.
- SAFEContractor at Work approved
- Each cleaning activity has a method statement and matching risk assessment
- Each site has its own site specific risk assessment
An assessment of the risk of musculoskeletal problems in cleaners should take account of:
- All cleaning tasks.
- The individual capacity of the cleaner.
- The loads involved.
- The work environment.
This assessment should also consider the main risk factors such as manual handing, awkward postures, work organisation and vibration from equipment.
