Nationwide support “London Care Partnership”

Douglas’s progression to work– A job well done:
Having a job where you feel valued and appreciated can be a great achievement for anyone, and it can particularly be a milestone for an individual with a disability. Having a place of employment to go to each day, or even a few hours a week, presents individuals with opportunities such as meeting new people and learning new skills.
A job opportunity can mean something further- freedom to go out into the world, become integrated and more visible in the community. Sinem Milosavljevic, Job Engagement Manager, notes: “We know from experience that with the right support, it is possible for most of our residents to get into some form of employment. We support our residents to make work ‘work’ for them, which can also be beneficial for local employers. Their companies gain eager workers who genuinely want to do their jobs well. It is a win-win for all involved, and it makes for a more inclusive community. Working closely with employers, we structure placements that allow reasonable adjustments to suit the capabilities and ambitions of our residents.”

Douglas has been one of the lucky ones to have found just such a job. Now, one day each week, Douglas sweeps the Abellio buses at the Twickenham Bus Garage, before they get washed. Over the last month, Douglas learnt how to undertake his work duties safely in a busy environment. Charles Acquah, Park Road Home Manager, who has intensively been job coaching Douglas, notes: “Douglas brings attention to detail and is thorough about his job. He ensures that all rubbish, even from the hard-to-see corners, is cleared. Since he started, Douglas’s enthusiasm just shines through. We are now working on a “picture book” that will illustrate and reinforce what Douglas needs to do and when, to use for this and future placements. We aim that Douglas can one day work independently, at his own pace.”

Douglas’s employer also appreciates his contributions. Clive Thorp, the Health and Safety Manager at Nationwide Cleaning & Support Services, adds, “We are pleased to have been able to provide an opportunity for Douglas to work within the community. Douglas has made a great start. We look forward to continuing our partnership with London Care Partnership.”
To enable more of our residents to participate in all forms of employment, wherever possible in paid work, and to make a valued contribution to the world of work, London Care Partnership seeks to enable supported job placements for people we support, through social entrepreneurship, and innovative employment models going forward.
